Did you ever think of cataloging your book collection? Its something I've wanted to do for some time now but one of those things that I just never seem to get around to. (I worked in a public library for almost 20 years, so the urge to have mine nice and orderly has never gone away!) I spent most of the afternoon cataloging my books. Well, at least my quilting and sewing books, all 154 of them. I'll save the longarming and fiction for another day. I used The Library Thing. https://www.librarything.com/ They have a fairly new app out for the iPhone and iPad. Its free and easy as can be to set up and use. Believe it or not I only came across two titles that I had purchased two of. NOW, that won't be happening again since I have everything at my fingertips on my phone. You can even set up a "lending" tab that will allow your friends to view and borrow your books! Even movies if you have a collection of those. Its all pretty cool and thought I'd share it with you.

We call ourselves Twisted Stitchers and been meeting for about ten years now. In the beginning (we actually started off as a miniature quilt making group) we all hauled our sewing machines and necessary supplies to work on projects. Ahhh, life was good.
Then it happened. One by one we started not bringing a sewing project, but a shiny new quilt magazine to peruse. Then it was new quilting books we'd acquired. Then we showed up with nothing but money in our pockets for lunch and shopping! It was all fun and games as they say.....until I felt as though I wasn't
getting anything accomplished and my time was wasted..... just a little....The company was ALWAYS good! Oh I love that group of women! So, I now take something every month to work on. Currently I'm on a binge to get my big basket of PhDs completed! This is the result of the first. It is a kit I purchased in Paducah
in 2013. It is from Modern Quilts (formerly known as Fun Quilts) by Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr. This particular pattern is called "Follow the Leader". For any of
you that know me, that title has never been a good fit. I have to do things my own way....I did make it a little bigger than the pattern and am anxious to get it quilted as soon as I choose the backing fabric. This was certainly a mindless project. Just what I needed before teaching at the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo at the end of the week in Cleveland! Check them out! http://www.sewingexpo.com/
And yes, I name my machines!

Currently I'm working on a log cabin project started a few years ago stitched entirely on this beautiful machine. Annie's decal is a Memphis Sphinx... especially fitting since I was born in Memphis, TN! Actually this old machine is just one in my whittled down collection. I use a treadle, featherweight, a 404, 185J among others. I'll choose a project and complete it using one of them.
Now, I'm down to just a few, but love them all for their simplicity and the absolutely beautiful stitch they make. After all, that is what they were made for....straight stitching! It always brings me great joy to sit down behind one of them electric or not and wonder about the lives of the women in past who used them and what they created with them. It somehow connects this old soul with the past.

Quite a long time since the last post! Time does fly as they say.....
Currently I'm working on finishing touches for class samples for Joann Fabrics. I'm very excited to be teaching all kinds of quilting and sewing classes for them! We've scheduled all the way through August 2015! That's a new concept for me, lol. I usually am queen of the last minute.
One other very important piece of news! I will be teaching a few classes at the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo in Cleveland this March. I was fortunate enough to have taught Teddy Bear making classes for them several years ago. I will now be offering a Tee Shirt Quilt class and a Mini Log Cabin class. It's so wonderful to be teaching again. Made me realize just how much I missed it. If you're interested, look at all the great classes they have to offer this Spring and beyond at www.sewingexpo.com.

This is the mini log cabin we'll be making at the expo......scrappy civil war reproductions...
Yes, it will be a quilted car! Lorain County Piecemakers Quilt Guilt is creating a quilted car for their fall quilt show in October. And next year we'll use it in conjunction with the Artist As Quiltmaker show in Oberlin ...
Yesterday was the third day we met at the Main Street Community Center in Downtown Amherst to work on the quilted car. We had so much fun! I'd say we're probably about half way done with the project. We still have to add the screening and the binding and some minor adjustments for completion. I'll keep you posted.... thank you ladies! ....Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07481213518167860082noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1904174815128209663.post-35139687547898123572013-05-26T07:44:00.001-07:002013-05-26T07:44:50.869-07:00Home At Last! Paducah is the sweetest little town! I love, love, love visiting ! This is my dear husband Jim sitting at a picnic table right along the river. I say "dear" in every sense of the word. Not many guys would take their wife to a quilt show...not to mention QUILT WEEK, and really enjoy it! He did ALOT of waiting for me during Quilt Week! He really should be the poster child for patience! This was his first quilt show and he was totally blown away by some of the work in the quilts! We were lucky enough to see "innocence" by Hollis Chatelain. This quilt is one that stays with you... time and again I think of that beautiful piece of art. Both of us do ... It was Jim's favorite from the entire show. Well, it wasn't in the show but in the museum on special loan for the week. Hollis is teaching a class later this year in California (I think) and boy would I love to go...maybe next! I am in such awe of her work! So glad she is part of the quilting world AND shares her talent through teaching!

The backing is tiny colored dots on yellow. Very happy quilt...!not quite twin, not quite full size. I'll call it "napping size" even though I've not been known to take naps! Geez, I might miss somethng!LOL
Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07481213518167860082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1904174815128209663.post-2585194949505894762013-04-27T17:02:00.000-07:002013-04-27T17:02:39.465-07:00Modern New York Beauty...Not sure why, but I'm finding that I'm really drawn to the modern quilts. I remember running across the "Fun Quilts" website with Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr several years ago and collected some fabrics and books. Fun Quilts is now called Modern Quilt Studio. (it still comes up if you google Fun Quilts) I had the pleasure of meeting Bill at the Paducah Quilt Week. He was very nice and enjoyed talking with him. I would have liked to meet Weeks too, but she wasn't there. (I did take an online class with her on Craftsy and would highly recommend it if you are into modern quilts) Anyway, I managed to find a "few" things in their booth. Looking forward to sewing that quilt kit from them!
In the mean time, I've pulled out some NY beauty blocks that will go into a modern quilt of my own. I figured it was better than the blocks just sitting in the closet and not being used. I put together the last unfinished block.

I had 16 blocks, not quite enough for a big quilt.

So, I put this last one together... I'm not normally a "pinner" but had to on this one. Maybe that's why I never finished this quilt. I remember starting out doing this with a friend and don't think either one of us finished it.

That's all for now. Have to locate the top and take a picture to post here...
My little log cabin "Home at Last" is in Bloomington, Indiana right now for the Indiana Heritage Quilt show. Almost as soon as it arrives back home, I'll be shipping it off to PADUCAH!!! I just received the letter of congratualtions on Friday that it was juried in the show! I am SO excited!
And...I'm lucky enough to be able to go to the show ....with my husband! He is abolutely the BEST!
now to find a hotel.....Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07481213518167860082noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1904174815128209663.post-77866485549604956522013-02-24T16:27:00.000-08:002013-02-24T16:27:04.967-08:00A New Year: In with the new, out with the old!Well after perusing some of the new quilting catalogs, I'm inspired to start sewing! For me that means some of the new stuff I've just seen. Forget all those unfinished PHDs (projects half done). I've weeded through them and decided which ones to toss, which ones to pass on to friends and which ones to actually finish. Whew, there are quite a few that I really want to complete, so, I'm making time to be in the sewing room to do just that. I mean scheduling time ON MY CALENDAR to go into the studio and sew! I also want to make some clothes to update the old wardrobe, not just quilts. Can some one please put some more hours in the day, please?Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07481213518167860082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1904174815128209663.post-40032428919743349912013-02-24T16:25:00.000-08:002013-02-24T16:25:23.383-08:00<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Looks like another pretty spring day, I'm listening to the birds, robins and babies in particular,
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">just outside the window.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've been getting some sewing done ! Yeah!! I have yet another tee shirt quilt (customer's) top completed and will begin quilting it tomorrow. I'm half way done on the crib size top for MY FIRST GRANDBABY! Pink and brown polka dots. My daughter will love it! And yes, it's a girl!
I was secretly hoping for twins, she is the generation afterall, but she didn't think it was as good an idea as I did. hmmmm.
The quilt is from the book, Quilts Made Modern by Weeks Ringle. I love most everything they do in that book even though I make mostly dark coloured traditional quilts.

while putting this fun little quilt together. It is machine appliqued using a decorative stitch. Now... how to quilt it...?Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07481213518167860082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1904174815128209663.post-65103522537659150382012-09-03T06:24:00.004-07:002012-09-04T07:53:13.358-07:00Home At Last

I finally got around to using it on something! Even I like this quilt. The colors really pop against the black fabric and will hold up well for traveling to classes and demos on making tee shirt quilts. It turned out to be a great group, very active and so inspiring! They do some pretty wonderful things, challenges included and the new one is "a quilt a month" for 2012 and all will be from Kathleen Tracy's books. January's challenge is Mourning Crosses, from her book Prairie Children and Their Quilts. I don't have this book (yet) so the block was drafted in EQ. I enjoyed doing the first of these little quilts SO much and am eagerly awaitng the February announcement. This is paper pieced and machine quilted, but on my domestic, not the longarm. The blocks are 3 1/2 inches, finished quilt size is 10x10.

With a little luck I'll have 12 little quilts by the end of the year!
Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07481213518167860082noreply@blogger.com0
